BUT! What's the point driving an SUV ... SPORTS Utility Vehicle, and fannying around trying to save a few quid on diesel. I spend so much on the car finance each month that the MPG does not make a significant dent on the overall cost. If I was commuting 20,000+ miles a year I would probably be driving a different car.

PS is fannying a rude word in the USA?

Agree and generally I don't drive very conservatively as is shown by my average which is about 32mpg (although this is adversely affected by lots of short trips) BUT it's a useful marker when selecting a cruise speed when covering long motorway distances IMO. To put it into context:

200 mile trip @ 70mph takes 2 hours 51 minutes and costs £29 (at £1.45/l)
200 mile trip @ 90mph takes 2 hours 13 minutes and costs £39 (at £1.45/l)

Save 38 minutes, pay £10 extra. You decide.

Re. fannying around, there is no fannying around if you're using cruise control.

Re. fannying and our friends across the pond, they won't be offended as they sit on their fannies *

* not all of the time, I hasten to add....
