To ensure capacity available, generator will not fully charge battery. That is a good thing for - marginal - fuel economy but bad for battery - it will never be fully charged, and hence life is shortened.
This has been discussed before and remedy for me and others is to hook up a CTEK smart charger - or similar - once a month or so. We believe battery life is extended with 100% or so.

I don't know, mine lasted almost six years before I needed to replace it. That is a reasonable amount of time in my book.
