Then why does a 335i have dual exhaust? It doesn't decrease the performance of my 335i having dual exhaust.
Quad pipes add minimal weight to a dual exhaust and has no performance hit what so ever. Quad pipes are just for looks, but I know they have so far been reserved for the M series. Maybe the dual exhaust on the 335i is just for looks as well to distinguish it from the 328i? I think the X3 3.5 should have dual exhaust to distinguish it from the X3 2.8 as well and especially with the M Sport Package to emphasize the Sport look.
Also the dual exhaust on my E39 540i never had to be replace in the 11 years I had that car, so replacement costs were never an issue.
