In contrast, one BMW technician has repaired a number of N20 engines with timing chain problems as reported on his blog at the link below.

It is hard to say how common this problem may be without better data. Such failures may occur more frequently as more 2012 to 2014 X3 28i vehicles (with the N20 engine and the original timing chain guide design) reach higher mileages.
