My driving experience is different than yours. I find the X3 35i to be plenty responsive for my needs with the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, if desired. From a dead start, the transmission may default to second gear in comfort mode, which may slow acceleration. I believe sport mode will enable starts in first gear without a down shift.
My X3 35i has averaged almost 23 mpg since purchase in mixed driving. Fuel economy meets my expectations. I believe the X3 28i in spirited driving is not significantly more economical than the 35i.
