I don't think you will be disappointed - already my 35i has no noticeable lag , and M40i has an aggressive throttle response - especially in Sport.
If anything 28i lacks some grunt for the (fairly) heavy X4.
You can rest (wait) in peace
For very quick overtaking, I recommend Man and downgearing before overtaking - then you don't get the jerk and half a second delay.
