The latest is that BMW (not the dealer) confirm my car is performing as it should. If I were still driving 35,000 / year I'd be screaming for them to take the car back. My driving patterns have changed and I can live with the noise (just), fortunately performance, economy and space are as expected so all is not lost. It is a very shoddy design if it's really meant to be this noisy.
