One of the best and most famous BMW's ever was the E30 M3. And it came with a potent 4-cylinder engine that gave the car great power but also great balance. The real BMW fanatics worshiped at its alter.
Frankly what makes a good luxury car engine in today's economy is a combination of refinement (nvh) and torque. And both are far easier to achieve with good fuel economy in a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine than a NA 6-cylinder engine.
