BMW started using TPM transmitters starting in mid-2006.
The current X3 uses (4) 433 mHz RF transmitters.
If your car has conventional rubber valve stems it uses the ABS sensors and monitors wheel speed differentials to determine if a tire is low.

If it has metal valve stems, it is equipped with internal TPMS transmitters. they have a typical minimum battery life of 5 or 6 years and should be rebuilt (battery and gaskets changed) every time the tires are replaced.
