There is a fan inside at the back of the head unit. It’s not dusty and makes noise depending how I position the head unit. It is definitely the problem. Just ordered a new fan on Amazon for $12.
I’ll have to open the head unit to repair it which doesn’t look too difficult but I’m sure many would not have the skills, in which case the head unit would have to be replaced at much greater expense.

For those interested the model number of the fan is ME40101V1-D03A-G99

The one I found on Amazon is ME40101V1-0000-G99. The specs seem to be the same.
I'm not sure a new fan would change that it would run. Like others have said in this thread it's basically a computer and so it will be hot sometimes. A custom heat sync would be better, but that doesn't really sound plausible.
