Thus far I have found BMWs to be less expensive to maintain. I have a 2014 X3 28i with 65k miles. Just last week I performed the first repair (not maintenance) of any kind it has had since it left the factory. It needed new gaskets for the oil filter housing and attached oil cooler. I did it for about $100 - a dealer would charge about $800. That works out to $12.50 per year in repairs over 8 years. I think it may need engine mounts, which will be another $200 or less to DIY, raising my annual repair bill to $37.50. The rest has been one belt, one set of plugs, 2 air filters, cabin air filters, wipers, oil and brake fluid, one set of brakes, and tires as needed. I also have a much more complex 2015 650ix convertible with 49k miles, and the annual repair bill (not maintenance) so far has averaged exactly $0 in 7 years.
