You have to check your map system, under Settings as BMW in their wisdom have used three different versions of mapping software.
SO once you get the correction version you can hunt for the right map update data AND you will also need the Activation code. You can get all this from BMW or independent suppliers.
I got mine data and code from BMW, and for my wife's car I bought from an independent co. New-ish BMW get updates over wifi automatically.
Older cars get the update using a USB stick with the data on it, and the activation code.
You just plug in the usb, the system should ask for the ( long) Activation code. It does take a while to update, I did it with the engine running to make sure it didnt switch off.
Compared to the gps on new-ish phones BMW seems to have lost the plot. No wonder people have gone over to Apple Maps and Google maps.
