You should be able to accommodate 5 average suitcases w/o folding down the seats, although rear visibility would probably be poor. Will you have 3 people sitting in the back or only 2? Its possible to do a 40/20/40 split with the X3.
For reference I recently helped my folks reorganize their office and was happy with how much stuff the car could hold. I folded one front and middle seat and was able to haul 13 15x12x12 boxes and 8 of those white boxes.
